How long have you lived at your current address?

If you have moved house and not redirected your mail, it could easily be stolen and misused - call Royal Mail on 08457 740 740 to set one up. Please also remember to update all bank and building society details.

Where is your mail delivered to?

Know when to expect your bank statements and utility bills. If you think your mail is not being delivered, call Royal Mail on 08457 740 740 to check a redirection has not been set-up without your authority. There is a real risk that post arriving in a shared hall could be intercepted or stolen. We suggest you put your post on hold when you go on holiday, the Royal Mail offer this service called Keepsafe.

How do you dispose of your personal mail?

By placing sensitive information in the household rubbish bin, you are at higher risk of becoming a victim of identity theft. It may be sensible to consider investing in a shredder, and shredding all your documentation before putting it in the recycling bin, alternatively burn these documents. Where do you keep important documents (driving licence, passport, P60/P45, etc)?

Store all your important documents in a safe place which can be locked or consider keeping them in different places so that they cannot be found easily by a criminal.

How often do you check your credit report?

Your credit report is one of the best indicators to determine whether identity fraud has been committed against you. Checking your credit report on a regular basis will show you when and where credit has been taken out in your name. Consider checking your credit report on a regular basis. Through CPP you can access your live credit report online at any time or, choose to receive four paper-based credit reports over 12 months.

Do you own a car?

All drivers are vulnerable, criminals use false plates to avoid paying speeding/parking fines, congestion charges or commit more serious criminal acts. If you receive fines that are nothing to do with you, notify the issuing authority and police immediately. When selling vehicles always obscure the number plate on photographs and update the details of ownership with the DVLA.

Have you posted your CV on to job sites?

When posting your CV on to job sites remove your home address and date of birth, once you have found a job remove your CV completely. This will reduce the risk of criminals stealing your identity to apply for jobs with banks and insurance companies. These criminals then steal personal customer data in your name and apply for credit from wage slips.

Online status

Do you use internet banking or membership based websites (ebay, paypal etc)?

Internet fraudsters often pose as banks to obtain your details so don’t reply to suspicious-looking e-mails. The fraudsters urge the recipient to click on a link to a website and asked to validate their personal security information by re-entering the details, thereby providing the fraudster with access to accounts and their contents.

Do you use the same password for different websites and computer applications?

Although the quantity of Passwords is increasing, it is important to keep them all unique, so if your Password is discovered criminals only have limited access. Never reveal your full password, even to your bank.

Bank / credit card status

Do you keep any other forms of ID with your credit or bank cards (driving licence, membership cards etc?)

It is not a legal requirement in the UK to carry your driving licence. If you are required to produce it by the Police this can be done by taking your licence to a designated Police Station, within the time limits imposed by the Police. Consider removing your driving licence from your purse or wallet if you normally carry it with you.

Do you check every item on credit card and bank statements?

Always check your bank and credit card statements on a regular basis. If you find any transactions you don't recognise, contact your bank or card provider to query the transaction immediately.

Have you used your credit cards abroad in the last 12 months?

When using your credit cards either in or outside the UK, take measures to ensure that your card is kept safe, when using it for payments, keep the card within your sight, if necessary go with the person taking your payment.

Do you have the same PIN for all or some of your cards?

Although the quantity of PIN numbers you need to remember is increasing because of the introduction of Chip and PIN Credit/Debit Cards, it is important to keep them all unique, so if your PIN number is discovered by someone they do not have access to all your accounts.

Do you regularly dine out at restaurants?

Never let your bank or credit card out of sight as they may be copied or cloned.

Do you opt out from having your details sold from the Electoral Register?

It is important to ensure your name is on the electoral register. However, when you complete the electoral register forms, there is a section which allows you to remove your details from the version of the electoral register which is made available to view and buy. By removing your details you could reduce the likelihood of being targeted with marketing literature.
