The postal risk
Identity thieves use a variety of techniques to steal your personal details. If you share a house, or your mailbox is outside your house or flat, identity thieves could intercept your mail. They can even use your details to redirect some of your mail to another address, making it easy for them to obtain bank and credit card details, utility bills or wage slips to build a profile and incur debts in your name. Details from Experian, the UK's leading credit reference agency, have seen redirected mail representing 32% of all of the fraud cases they deal with. (Experian 2007)
Thieves can also go through your rubbish to find documentation such as financial statements, bills, Inland Revenue documents or wage slips. The details contained in documents such as these can then be used to obtain credit, goods or services illegally.
