Crime online
Computer users are bombarded with a staggering 11,315 spam e-mails each a year, according to a recent CPP survey, January 2007. And as people accidentally open at least five spam e-mails on average every single day, they are putting their entire identities at risk to fraudsters 1,825 times a year; 110,413 times a lifetime.
Recently ‘phishing’ has become one of the fastest growing phenomena. The term refers to the attempts made by people to get hold of personal details such as passwords, address and credit card details by posing as a trustworthy person or business. The fraudsters urge the recipient to click on a link to a website and asked to validate their personal security information by re-entering the details, thereby providing the fraudster with access to accounts and their contents.
The number of phishing attacks has risen dramatically, with the latest APACS data showing more than 20,000 reported phishing incidents in the first half of 2008 - an increase of more than 180 per cent from the same period last year (APACS July 2008).
