What is identity fraud?
Identity fraud happens when someone uses your name and personal details without your knowledge, usually to open credit accounts, obtain loans or even buy goods in your name.
To avoid becoming a victim, it's best to be aware of all the common methods of identity fraud and to stay alert. Once you know about the problem, you may ask yourself 'Can I really afford to be without Identity Protection?'
Follow the links in the menu below, to find out more about Identity Fraud.
- How big a problem is identity fraud?
Identity fraud crime rose by 8% in 2007, with over 185,000 people becoming victims of fraud. (CIFAS, the UK's Fraud Prevention Service, 2008)
- The silent crime
Often the victim knows nothing about the fraud until someone asks for payment on loans or bills which have been opened fraudulently.
- Crime online
As people accidentally open at least five spam e-mails on average every single day, they are putting their entire identities at risk to fraudsters 1,825 times a year; 110,413 times a lifetime. (CPP survey, January 2007)
- The daily risk
Unsuspecting Britain's are leaving themselves open to identity fraud every day.
- The postal risk
Fraudsters only need to obtain an individual's name and address from a piece of junk mail to begin forging their new identity.
