- Street robbery abroad
Francis Graham
Street robberies can be a real problem in Florence, Italy, and when Francis Graham had her wallet stolen in a restaurant, she was left with just enough money to cover the meal and nothing else.
With her husband 300 miles away in Turin at a business conference, she needed money to cover her expenses for another four days, including hotel bills and other living expenses.
She says: “My immediate thought was one of total desperation. I knew for the next few days I was alone in a foreign country with no access to money and even unable to pay the hotel bill. I was also conscious that criminals had all my debit and credit cards in their possession and could be at that very moment spending heavily.”
One quick call to CPP immediately improved the situation. We wired €1,000.00 to a nearby exchange that Ms Graham collected the next morning.
She commented: “Without CPP I don't know what I would have done... Even with hindsight it's difficult to say how I'd have resolved the desperate situation I was in. In today's climate you'd be silly not to have a product like Card Protection.”
- Lost cards abroad
Stuart Powell
When company director Stuart Powell arrived in Tenerife, at the beginning of a two-week holiday, the awful realisation set in that he had misplaced his only access to ready cash — his NatWest Visa Gold Card.
Initially very agitated in a stressful situation, Mr Powell immediately called the CPP loss reporting line in the UK and instantly had his cards cancelled and reordered.
He said: “I thought it might be easier to get my bank to wire emergency funds across, but after speaking with them and realising it would take at least three days before any cash would be available, I decided to take up CPP's offer of emergency cash. Another quick call to CPP resulted in €850.00 being wired through to a nearby Western Union office.
“This made a huge difference to the situation I had found myself in only two hours previous. Feeling instantly relieved, my wife and I retired to the hotel pool only to get the call on my mobile from CPP informing me the money was waiting to be collected.
“The agents at CPP were helpful, professional and empathised with the stressful situation that we found ourselves in. The service saved us a lot of hassle and meant that we could continue our holiday reassured that our cards were safe and that we had money to spend.”
- Bag snatched abroad
Shaun Chatterton
Shaun Chatterton, a retired 61-year-old from Rookley on the Isle of Wight, was particularly relieved to have Card Protection from the CPP Group Plc (CPP).
Whilst on a cycling break in Marseille, south of France, Mr Chatterton was unlucky enough to have his bag snatched whilst out shopping. “I was just returning to my hotel and I felt a tug on the strap of my shoulder bag,” he said. “I turned, only to see a thief disappear with my bag in to the narrow alleyways.
“I'd popped out to buy a present for my wife only to have my bag snatched in a fraction of a second. Worse still it contained my passport, wallet, travel tickets, mobile phone — essentially all my important documents. I was left completely stranded.”
Mr Chatterton wasted no time contacting CPP to cancel his credit and debt cards, fearing that the thieves could use them quickly. “CPP arranged for €1,000.00 to be sent to a post office. They even called me at the British consulate to inform me where I should pick the money up.
“After the initial shock my overriding feelings were one of “thank goodness I've got Card Protection” and after speaking with CPP I was left with a feeling of how professional, friendly and helpful the agent was. I really thought I had a friend at the end of the phone.
- Car broken into
Alan Griffin
When Alan Griffin returned to his car after visiting his friends, he was shocked and angry to find that the front passenger window had been smashed. And worst still that his glove compartment had been broken into and a number of credit and debit cards stolen.
He immediately contacted CPP to put a stop on all his payment cards, as he didn't want to be liable for any fraudulent spending. He had also registered some other cards in his possession including membership cards and a fuel payment card. CPP called the company that administered the fuel card, only to discover that the offices were closed for the weekend and had no 24-hour loss reporting lines.
CPP told Mr Griffin that they would call first thing Monday and report its loss. However, as he soon discovered when the fuel company called him up on Monday morning to ask about his weekend spending spree, the thieves had spent more than £2000 over the course of 36 hours, visiting different garages and making over 20 separate transactions.
Mr Griffin said “I was shocked to discover that the fuel card company didn't have an emergency loss reporting line and that I was liable for any fraudulent transactions in the first 48 hours.
“Thankfully, I had Card Protection via CPP and they settled my claim in full. I didn't know that I'd be liable for these fraudulent transactions, so I'd urge anyone out there with a fuel card to check their liability as most of these cards aren't Chip and PIN enabled so can be easily used if stolen.”
