I took out CPP Card Protection because it covered all my cards, passport, everything. It just seemed a good idea, a reasonable cost and a good thing to have if I ever lost my wallet.
I was on a weekend coach trip to Belgium, staying in a hotel, when I realised that my wallet and passport had been stolen. The first reaction is 'panic' and you just don't know what to do. When you're in a foreign country you feel like you're on your own.
Luckily I had the CPP key fob on my keys with the number to ring. I called CPP on the Saturday morning and they were very helpful. I only had a few notes and Belgian currency and the key fob. My wallet with all my identification and my passport were all gone. CPP said they could get some emergency money out to me, but as it was a weekend it was a little more difficult. I also had no ID, so had to get a police report. Anyway, CPP managed to negotiate all this and get some money wired over to me to last through Sunday and Monday.
If I had not had this cover, I don't know how I would have got all the numbers to cancel my cards. Thank goodness I had the key fob. I wouldn't have known where to start without it.

When I returned to my car after walking my dog I discovered that the window was smashed and my bag had been stolen from under the seat. I was with a friend who said we should go to the police. But I just wanted to get home and ring CPP to get all my cards stopped first.
It is a terrible feeling, you feel very vulnerable – you know the thieves have your address and you do feel very open to being targeted. I don't know if they tried to get any money out as everything was stopped so promptly.

I wanted to check my bank balance, but when I went to look for my card, it wasn't where I normally keep it. I checked my shopping bag, all my coat pockets, I even started turning out drawers.
I was really starting to panic by this point, I was so worried that someone might have got hold of my money. I had recently retired and my pay-out was temporarily sitting in my bank account, so the thought of someone getting hold of that made me utterly distraught.
I went to the bank to see if my card had been handed in, but it hadn't. I was so upset that I hadn't really thought about my Card Protection policy until the lady in the bank reminded me. She rang CPP for me and the chap I spoke to was fantastic – he was so helpful, professional and reassuring. He basically said, Look, don't worry, I'm cancelling your card right now, nobody can use it, and I'm ordering you a new one.
Shortly after cancelling my card, I received a letter from CPP confirming that the card had been cancelled and a new one ordered. I thought that was great – it's not often that you get things on paper like that these days, it was just a really nice touch and it put my mind at rest.
